How Search Engine Indexing Works
Before diving into the submission sites list, it helps to understand how search engines discover and index websites. This context explains why some methods work better than others and why traditional "search engine submission" isn't what it used to be.
Search engines use automated programs called crawlers (or spiders) to discover web pages. Googlebot, Bingbot, and other crawlers follow links from page to page across the web. When they find a new page, they download its content, analyze it, and add it to their index - the massive database of web pages that search results are pulled from.
There are three ways a search engine discovers your website:
- 1.Crawling links from other sites: This is the primary discovery method. When a high-authority site like Product Hunt or G2 links to your website, search engine crawlers follow that link and discover your site. This is why directory submission is so effective - each directory listing creates a link that crawlers follow.
- 2.Direct URL submission: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools let you submit URLs directly. This tells the search engine "this page exists, please crawl it." It's the fastest way to get a specific page indexed.
- 3.XML sitemap submission: Your sitemap.xml file lists all the pages on your site. Submitting it to search engines gives them a complete map of your content. They'll eventually crawl every URL in your sitemap.
The old-school concept of "submitting your website to search engines" - where you'd fill out a form on Google or Yahoo with your URL and wait to be indexed - no longer exists in that form. Modern search engine submission is about using webmaster tools and building backlinks that help crawlers discover your site naturally.
Search Engine Submission Sites (Complete List)
Here are all the major search engine submission points, ordered by global market share and importance. For most websites, the first two (Google and Bing) cover 95%+ of search traffic.
1. Google Search Console
The most important search engine submission. Google Search Console lets you submit individual URLs for indexing, submit your sitemap, and monitor how Google crawls and indexes your site. Every website owner should have GSC set up.
How to submit:
- 1.Create a Google Search Console account
- 2.Verify ownership of your domain (DNS, HTML file, or meta tag)
- 3.Submit your XML sitemap
- 4.Use URL Inspection to request indexing for important pages
2. Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing powers not just Bing.com but also DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, and Ecosia search results. Submitting to Bing gets your site indexed across multiple search engines at once. You can import your Google Search Console setup directly.
How to submit:
- 1.Create a Bing Webmaster Tools account (can import from GSC)
- 2.Verify your domain
- 3.Submit your XML sitemap
- 4.Use URL Submission tool for priority pages
3. Yandex Webmaster
Yandex is the dominant search engine in Russia and is significant in several CIS countries. If you have any Russian-speaking audience or operate in Eastern Europe, Yandex submission is essential. The webmaster tools interface is similar to Google Search Console.
How to submit:
- 1.Create a Yandex Webmaster account
- 2.Add your site and verify ownership
- 3.Submit your XML sitemap
- 4.Monitor indexation in the dashboard
4. IndexNow (Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver)
IndexNow is a protocol that lets you instantly notify multiple search engines when content is created, updated, or deleted. One API call notifies Bing, Yandex, Seznam, and Naver simultaneously. Supported by many CMS platforms including WordPress and Cloudflare.
How to submit:
- 1.Generate an API key from indexnow.org
- 2.Host the key file on your site root
- 3.Send POST requests when you publish or update content
- 4.All participating search engines get notified instantly
5. DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo doesn't have a direct submission tool. It primarily uses Bing's index combined with its own crawler (DuckDuckBot) and other sources. Submitting to Bing Webmaster Tools is the most effective way to get indexed on DuckDuckGo.
How to submit:
- 1.Submit to Bing Webmaster Tools (DuckDuckGo uses Bing's index)
- 2.Ensure your robots.txt allows DuckDuckBot
- 3.Build backlinks to help DuckDuckBot discover your pages
6. Baidu Webmaster Tools
Baidu dominates search in China. If you target Chinese-speaking users or have a Chinese market presence, Baidu submission is critical. The interface is in Chinese, but browser translation makes it manageable. Requires ICP filing for .cn domains.
How to submit:
- 1.Create a Baidu account (may require Chinese phone verification)
- 2.Add your site to Baidu Webmaster Tools
- 3.Verify domain ownership
- 4.Submit your sitemap and key URLs

Directory Submission: The Modern Search Engine Submission
Here's something most "search engine submission" guides don't tell you: the fastest and most effective way to get indexed by search engines in 2026 isn't submitting directly to Google or Bing. It's building backlinks from high-authority directories.
When you get listed on a DR 90+ directory like Product Hunt or G2, Googlebot follows that link to your site within hours - not the days or weeks that direct URL submission can take for new websites. And you get the SEO benefit of the backlink on top of the faster indexing. It's a two-for-one.
Think of directory submission as "search engine submission with benefits." You get indexed faster, you get a permanent backlink, you get referral traffic, and you get brand visibility. Direct search engine submission only gives you indexing.
| Platform | Type | DR | How It Helps Indexing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product Hunt | Startup Directory | 91 | A strong Product Hunt listing gets indexed by Google within hours and creates a permanent, high-authority backlink that helps all your pages rank better. |
| G2 | SaaS Review | 92 | G2 listings rank for thousands of software-related keywords. Your G2 page essentially becomes a search engine submission for commercial queries. |
| AlternativeTo | Software Discovery | 82 | AlternativeTo pages rank for "[product] alternative" searches. Each listing is a new entry point for search engines to discover your brand. |
| Crunchbase | Business Database | 91 | Crunchbase profiles show up in branded searches and get crawled by every major search engine. Acts as a verified business submission across all engines. |
| GitHub | Code Repository | 96 | For developer tools and open-source projects, a GitHub repository is one of the fastest ways to get indexed. GitHub pages are crawled almost instantly by Google. |
| Medium | Publishing | 95 | Publishing on Medium with links to your site gets Google to discover and crawl your domain through one of the web's highest-authority platforms. |

Step-by-Step: Submit Your Website to Search Engines
Follow this process to ensure your website is discoverable by all major search engines:
Step 1: Set Up Google Search Console
This is your most important step. Go to search.google.com/search-console, add your domain, and verify ownership. The easiest verification method is adding a DNS TXT record, but you can also use an HTML file upload or meta tag. Once verified, submit your XML sitemap (usually at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml).
Step 2: Set Up Bing Webmaster Tools
Go to bing.com/webmasters and import your Google Search Console setup (Bing offers a one-click import). This gets you indexed on Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, and Ecosia simultaneously. Submit your sitemap here too.
Step 3: Submit Key Pages for Indexing
In Google Search Console, use the URL Inspection tool to submit your homepage and most important pages. Click "Request Indexing" for each URL. This puts them in Google's priority crawl queue. Do the same in Bing's URL Submission tool.
Step 4: Build Backlinks Through Directory Submission
Submit your website to startup submission sites and SaaS directories. Each listing creates a backlink that search engine crawlers follow to discover and re-crawl your site. This is the most effective long-term strategy for search engine visibility because it combines indexing with SEO authority building.
Step 5: Monitor Indexation
Check Google Search Console's "Pages" report weekly to monitor how many of your pages are indexed. Look for pages that are "Discovered - currently not indexed" or "Crawled - currently not indexed" and fix any issues that prevent indexation (thin content, noindex tags, canonical issues).
Common Search Engine Submission Mistakes
Paying for "search engine submission services"
Services that charge to "submit your site to 500 search engines" are scams. There are only a handful of real search engines, and submitting to all of them is free. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are the only two that matter for most websites, and both are completely free.
Submitting without a sitemap
Submitting individual URLs without also submitting your XML sitemap means search engines have to discover the rest of your pages through crawling. Always submit your sitemap first - it gives search engines a complete map of every page on your site.
Thinking submission = ranking
Getting indexed is not the same as ranking. Submission just gets your page into the search engine's database. Ranking well requires quality content, backlinks, and technical SEO. Directory submission helps with both - it speeds up indexing AND builds the backlinks that improve rankings.
Ignoring backlinks
Direct submission helps with initial indexing, but the ongoing crawl frequency and depth depends on your backlink profile. Sites with more high-quality backlinks get crawled more frequently and more deeply. Building backlinks through directory submission directly improves how often search engines visit your site.
Only submitting once
Search engine submission isn't a one-time task. Whenever you publish new important pages, update your sitemap and use URL Inspection to request indexing. Set up IndexNow to automatically notify search engines of content changes.
