What a business listing is actually for
A business listing is not a backlink. Almost every directory on this page marks its links nofollow, and Google said in 2012 that mass directory links do not count. Listings do three other things, and those three are why local businesses still need them:
- Citations. Google's local algorithm checks whether your name, address and phone appear consistently across trusted directories. Consistent citations are one of the strongest signals for the local three-pack, alongside reviews and proximity.
- Data feeds. Apple Maps pulls from Yelp and Foursquare. Uber and Snap license Foursquare Places. MapQuest and Local.com aggregate from the core listings. Fix the sources and the copies fix themselves.
- Brand-name rankings and AI answers. Your BBB, Yelp and Manta pages rank for your company name, and ChatGPT and Perplexity read them when asked about you. An unclaimed page with an old address is what they will find.
The consequence: the goal is consistency across the directories that matter, not volume across every directory that exists. Twenty correct listings beat two hundred inconsistent ones.
The 44 business listing sites, in priority order
Grouped by how established each directory is, which is also the order to work through them.
1. The eight listings that feed maps and AI assistants
Do these first, in one sitting. Google Maps, Apple Maps, Bing, Siri and the AI assistants read from them, and the smaller directories copy from them.
Google Business Profile
Best for: Every US businessnofollowThe listing that controls whether you appear in Google Maps and the local three-pack. Verification is by postcard, phone or video, and takes a few days. Everything else on this page is secondary to getting this one complete: category, hours, photos, services and a description with your main keyword in the first sentence. If you only claim one listing, claim this one.
Yelp
Best for: Consumer-facing businessesnofollowThe largest consumer review site in the United States, with more referring domains than any other directory here. Its listing data also feeds Apple Maps and several voice assistants, so an unclaimed or wrong Yelp page spreads errors. Claim it, fill it in, and ignore the sales calls for paid ads, which are aggressive. Do not solicit reviews on Yelp; its filter penalises businesses that do.
Better Business Bureau
Best for: Trust signals for services and B2Blink type unverifiedA free BBB profile exists for most US businesses whether you created it or not, and it usually ranks on page one for your company name. Claim it to correct the details and respond to complaints. Accreditation, which adds the seal, is a paid annual fee and optional. Its value is trust with older and more cautious buyers, not links.
Bing Places
Best for: Bing Maps and Windows searchnofollowBing has around a tenth of US search but it is the default in Windows, Edge and Copilot, and its local results come from Bing Places. You can import your Google Business Profile in a few clicks and keep the two in sync. Ten minutes of work for a channel most competitors ignore.
Apple Business Connect
Best for: Apple Maps, Siri and SpotlightnofollowLaunched in 2023 to let businesses control their Apple Maps card directly instead of through Yelp and Foursquare data. Low link value, high visibility: every iPhone user who searches Maps, asks Siri or uses Spotlight sees this card. Add photos, hours and a Showcase promotion. Verification is by Apple ID and a phone call.
Foursquare
Best for: Location data that other apps licensenofollowMost people stopped using the Foursquare app years ago, but its Places database is licensed to Uber, Snap, Twitter and thousands of other apps, so a wrong address here appears in all of them. Claim the venue through Foursquare for Business and fix the pin. Essential if you have a physical address, irrelevant if you do not.
Nextdoor
Best for: Local services and neighbourhood businesseslink type unverifiedThe neighbourhood social network, with a free business page and recommendations from residents. For a plumber, a cafe or a dentist it can be the best referral source on this list; for a software company it is useless. Nextdoor also runs paid local ads, which are optional.
Yellow Pages
Best for: A core citation every local SEO tool checksnofollowThe original directory, now owned by Thryv, still ranks for millions of "[service] near me" queries and is one of the citations that BrightLocal, Whitespark and Moz Local check for consistency. The free listing is enough; the paid upgrades are not worth it. Sister sites Superpages, DexKnows and Yellowbook share the same data.

2. Major US business directories
Established general directories with at least 20,000 sites linking to them. Free listings, real traffic, mostly nofollow.
MapQuest
Best for: Legacy map trafficnofollowStill one of the most-linked map sites in the country, mostly from old embedded directions. Listings arrive through data partners rather than a direct form, so the practical route is to make sure Yelp and Foursquare are correct and let MapQuest inherit them. Claim directly only if the listing is wrong.
Angi
Best for: Home servicesnofollowFormerly Angie's List. The business profile is free and ranks for your name; the business model is selling you leads, which contractors either love or complain about loudly. Worth a profile for any home services company because homeowners search there. Set a lead budget before you activate it.
Brownbook
Best for: A quick free global listinglink type unverifiedA UK-founded global business directory with strong US coverage and a fast, free claim process. It is widely reported to give a dofollow link, which would make it one of the few large listing sites that do, but the site blocks automated checks so we could not confirm it from the HTML. Treat it as a citation with a possible bonus.
Thumbtack
Best for: Local services marketplacenofollowA marketplace for local pros, from photographers to movers. The profile is free and gets you found; you pay per lead or per contact when a customer reaches out. Reviews on Thumbtack matter more than on most directories because customers compare quotes side by side.
MerchantCircle
Best for: Small local businessesnofollowA local business network with a free listing that supports a description, links, photos and offers. It has been around since 2005 and still ranks for local queries in smaller markets. Claim it, fill it in, and do not buy the upsells.
Manta
Best for: Small business profilesnofollowOne of the larger small-business directories in the US, with a free profile that ranks for company names. Expect a steady stream of emails selling the premium listing after you sign up. The free profile is fine and the premium adds little.
Alignable
Best for: Referrals between local ownerslink type unverifiedA social network for small business owners with a public company page. Its value is referrals from other owners in your area rather than consumer traffic. Free to join; the paid tier adds promotion and is optional.
Tupalo
Best for: One more citationnofollowEuropean-founded local directory with US coverage and reviews. Low effort, low traffic, one more consistent citation. Five minutes.
Citysearch
Best for: Restaurants, bars and city serviceslink type unverifiedA city guide that predates Yelp. Listings are fed from data partners, so claim it mainly to correct details. Its sister site Insider Pages shares the data.
Hotfrog
Best for: Fast approvallink type unverifiedFree business directory with country editions and approval within days. Historically dofollow, and widely reported as such, but the site blocks automated checks so we could not confirm it. Worth the ten minutes either way.
Superpages
Best for: A citation from the Yellow Pages networknofollowSister site of Yellow Pages under Thryv, with the same listing data. Claim it because local SEO tools count it as a separate citation, not because anyone browses it.
Cybo
Best for: Global directory with a large US sectionlink type unverifiedA global business directory that aggregates listings by city and category, with a large US section. Free claim. Its pages rank surprisingly often for company names in smaller cities.
3. Mid-size directories worth ten minutes each
Between 5,000 and 20,000 referring domains. Free, quick, and useful mainly as consistent citations.
Chamber of Commerce
Best for: Ranking for your company namenofollowNot the official chambers of commerce, but a large business directory that uses the name and ranks well for company-name searches. Free listing with a description and link.
ShowMeLocal
Best for: Local listing with hours and photoslink type unverifiedFree local listing that supports categories, opening hours, photos and coupons. Approval is quick and the interface is dated but functional.
EZlocal
Best for: Simple form, days to approvelink type unverifiedOne of the simpler submission forms on this page, approved within a few days. Free basic listing; paid plans add a website and promotion, which you do not need.
Cylex
Best for: International directory with a US editionlink type unverifiedThe US edition of a directory network with more than 30 country sites. Free listing. Widely reported as dofollow, but Cylex blocks automated checks, so unconfirmed.
Hub.biz
Best for: A verified-nofollow citationnofollowFree business listing with its own subdomain per business. We checked a live listing: the website link carries rel="nofollow", so it is a citation, not a link. Still fine as one.
n49
Best for: US and Canadalink type unverifiedCanadian-born directory with a US section and reviews. Free claim, quick approval.
2FindLocal
Best for: Local listing with reviewslink type unverifiedFree local directory with reviews and photos and a straightforward claim flow.
CitySquares
Best for: Neighbourhood-level listingsnofollowUS local directory organised by neighbourhood. Free basic listing, nofollow link.
Yellowbot
Best for: One more Yellow Pages-style citationlink type unverifiedA Yellow Pages-style directory with reviews. Free listing; part of the wider citation network that local tools check.
DexKnows
Best for: Thryv network citationnofollowPart of the Thryv network alongside Yellow Pages and Superpages. Same data, separate citation.
Spoke
Best for: Company and people profilesnofollowA company and people directory, closer to a Crunchbase-lite than a local listing. Free company page that ranks for the company name.
Tuugo
Best for: A free US listinglink type unverifiedUS edition of an international business directory. Free listing with description and link.
Local.com
Best for: Aggregated local searchlink type unverifiedA local search engine whose listings come mostly from aggregators, so fix the core eight and it follows. Claim only to correct errors.
Cityfos
Best for: Quick free listinglink type unverifiedFree listing with a short review queue and city-level categories.
Insider Pages
Best for: Review-led local directorylink type unverifiedReview-led local directory in the Citysearch family. Shares data with Citysearch; claiming one usually updates the other.
BizHwy
Best for: State-by-state categorieslink type unverifiedSmall free directory organised by state and category. Low traffic, quick citation.
Yellowbook
Best for: Thryv network citationnofollowAnother Thryv-network directory sharing Yellow Pages data. Free listing.
iBegin
Best for: US and Canadalink type unverifiedFree listing covering the US and Canada, with reviews and a map.
SaleSpider
Best for: B2B small business networklink type unverifiedA small-business social network with a free company profile and classifieds. More B2B than consumer.
Fyple
Best for: Listing with reviews and photoslink type unverifiedFree business listing with reviews, photos and a description. Quick claim.
eLocal
Best for: Contractors wanting pay-per-call leadslink type unverifiedA directory plus a pay-per-call lead service for contractors, lawyers and other professionals. The profile is free; the phone leads are not.
4. Small directories, last on the list
Under 5,000 referring domains. Do them if you are working through a full citation build; skip them otherwise.
Opendi
Best for: A European network's US editionlink type unverifiedUS edition of a European directory network. Free listing, low traffic.
Yasabe
Best for: Hispanic and bilingual marketslink type unverifiedBilingual English and Spanish directory. The one small directory here with a real reason to exist: if you serve Spanish-speaking customers, list here.
LocalStack
Best for: A fast free citationlink type unverifiedSmall US local directory. Free listing, approved quickly.
On the numbers: referring domains are from the DataForSEO backlink index, September 2026, and measure how many other websites link to the directory itself. Link types marked nofollow were read from a live listing's HTML; "unverified" means the site blocks automated checks. Costs are for the basic listing; every directory here also sells upgrades you do not need.

Free business listing sites in the USA (no fee to list)
44 of the 44 directories on this page accept a free basic listing, and the remaining three (Angi, Thumbtack, eLocal) have a free profile with paid leads on top. There is no business directory in the United States worth paying for a basic listing on. What the paid tiers sell is placement and ads, which only make sense once your free listings are complete and consistent.
The free ones to do in order: Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Foursquare, Yellow Pages, then MapQuest, MerchantCircle, Manta, Brownbook, Hotfrog and Superpages. That is thirteen listings, about three hours, and covers every citation the local SEO tools check for.
How to submit without breaking your NAP
NAP is name, address, phone. Local search engines match listings to your business by comparing those three fields across directories, and small differences split your citations into what looks like two businesses. The rules:
- Write the NAP once, then paste it. Decide the exact business name, address format and phone format, put it in a note, and paste it into every form. Never retype it. "Suite 200" versus "Ste 200" and "Inc." on one site but not another are the classic mistakes.
- One website URL everywhere. With or without www, with or without a trailing slash, pick one and point every listing at the homepage, not a campaign page.
- Same primary category. Choose the most specific primary category Google Business Profile offers, then pick the closest match on each other directory.
- Reuse one set of photos. A logo and three to five photos. Listings with photos get claimed and clicked more; you do not need new ones per site.
- Keep a spreadsheet. Directory, login email, date, listing URL, status. When you move office or change phone numbers, this is the list you update.
- Core eight in one sitting. They are the ones the aggregators copy from. Get them consistent first, then add the rest over a week.
The full process, including Google Business Profile verification, review handling and what to do when a duplicate listing appears, is in the local directory submission guide.
If you sell software, not services
Claim Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Crunchbase so your company details are consistent everywhere AI assistants look, then stop. Business listing sites send local foot traffic, not signups, and nearly all of their links are nofollow. A SaaS, app or AI tool gets its links and its users from startup and software directories, where the audience is looking for tools and most links are dofollow.
We track 128 of them with live Domain Rating on the startup directories catalogue, the classic general-purpose web directories are on the free web directories list, and the sites whose links we verified as dofollow are on the free backlink sites list. If you would rather not do a hundred submissions by hand, our done-for-you service covers them with a unique description for each.

How we ranked these business listing sites
- Live and accepting listings. Every directory was checked in September 2026. Dead directories that still appear on other lists were dropped.
- Ranked by referring domains. The number of other websites linking to the directory, from the DataForSEO backlink index, is the most honest public measure of how established a directory is. Within the core eight the order is by role, not size.
- Link types checked, not assumed. Where we could read a live listing's HTML, we did, and Hub.biz turned out nofollow despite being listed as dofollow elsewhere. Where a site blocks automated checks, we say unverified rather than repeat what other lists claim.
- No pay-for-placement. No directory paid to be here and there are no affiliate links.
Country lists for the UK, India, Australia and Canada are on the directory submission page.
US Business Listing Sites FAQ
What are the best free business listing sites in the USA?
Start with the eight that feed maps and voice assistants: Google Business Profile, Yelp, Better Business Bureau, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Foursquare, Nextdoor and Yellow Pages. Then add the major general directories: MapQuest, Brownbook, MerchantCircle, Manta, Alignable, Citysearch, Hotfrog and Superpages. All of them accept a free basic listing.
Do business listing sites give dofollow backlinks?
Most do not. Yelp, Yellow Pages, Foursquare, Manta, Hub.biz and the Thryv network mark their links nofollow. Brownbook, Hotfrog and Cylex are widely reported as dofollow, but they block automated checks so we could not confirm it. The value of business listings is citation consistency and ranking for your company name, not link equity. For dofollow links, use startup and software directories instead.
How many business listing sites should I submit to?
The core eight, then ten to fifteen of the major and mid-size directories, then stop. Beyond that each listing adds almost nothing and is one more place your details can go stale. Keep a spreadsheet with the login and listing URL for each so you can update them when you move or change phone numbers.
What information do I need to create a business listing?
Business name, street address, phone number and website exactly as they appear on your own site, plus a primary category, opening hours, a logo, three to five photos and a short description. Use the same name, address and phone format on every site. Mismatches such as "Suite 200" on one site and "Ste. 200" on another are the most common reason citations fail to help.
Are business listing sites worth it for a software company?
Claim Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect so your company name, address and website are consistent everywhere AI assistants and map apps look, then stop. Skip the local service marketplaces. For backlinks and signups, startup and SaaS directories matter far more than business listings.
How long does it take for a business listing to appear?
Google Business Profile verification takes a few days by postcard or minutes by phone or video. Yelp, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect are usually live within a day of verification. The smaller directories approve within one to seven days. Data aggregators such as MapQuest and Local.com update from the core listings over several weeks.
